Sullivan County was formed in March, 1809, from Ulster County, and named for Major General John Sullivan, who served in the French and Indian War and the Revolutionary War. Settlements were made in the Cochecton area as early as the 1750's, by families from the Connecticut area. Information such as census and probate records prior to 1809 would be in Ulster Co.
